Gurukula or Yoga for Children was established in 1987 by Gurani Anjali as a way of introducing the Yoga system to children. Over the years, many children from various cultural backgrounds passed through our does.

Yoga is a system suitable for all children, no matter what their cultural background. It is a practice which develops the body and mind and opens the child to his/her senses and breath.

Yoga Postures

Instruction in and practice of these exercises are provided on a weekly basis. Yoga postures are an important part of a child’s overall development. Through the repetition of Yoga postures as well as various breathing exercises, the child will develop balance, strength, flexibility, concentration and calmness of body and mind. This training fosters a sense of well being which will provide a solid foundation for future growth.

Interdependence and Appreciation

Another important focus of Yoga for Children classes is the promotion of appreciation for the child’s relationship with the elements (earth, water, fire, air and space) and other people. The realization of interdependence in these relations is the key to a success life.

The Mood

Gurukula is conducted in a manner which aim at providing an atmosphere which encourages a child’s creativity, especially in such areas as art, music, drama, and dance. Emphasis is on the development of camaraderie and acceptance of other children in the class.

Art Projects

In addition to the Yoga Postures, the class has a segment for arts and crafts projects. These are planned according to the age and interests of the child. Specially trained instructors for various projects include a certified teacher for art, a needlepoint instructor and a licensed carpenter for wood projects.
